Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin

Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin is a 1996 graduate of the Gallia Academy High School in Gallipolis, Ohio and a 1997 graduate of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. After completing the peace officer academy, Sheriff Champlin worked in several different sectors of public service including work as a dispatcher at the Gallia County 911 Center, a probation officer with the Gallia County Juvenile Court and a deputy sheriff with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office before, being hired by the Gallipolis Police Department as a patrolman in 1999.

Sheriff Champlin enjoyed a successful career with the Gallipolis Police Department over a period of 18 years working in such specializations as a canine handler, a narcotics investigator and a clandestine lab technician. Sheriff Champlin received two promotions during his time with the Gallipolis Police Department first to the rank of sergeant in 2005 and finally to the rank of lieutenant in 2010. Sheriff Champlin was awarded the Gallia County Lawman of the year award in 2001 for his activity and accomplishments during the calendar year of 2000. As a supervisor with the Gallipolis Police Department, Sheriff Champlin served as the agencies second in command and was administratively responsible for duties such as the weapons program, special response team, honor guard, and departmental scheduling. In addition, Sheriff Champlin performed in a role as a first line supervisor. Sheriff Champlin is a certified law instructor in several law enforcement topics and has enjoyed educating young officers throughout his career. Outside of the law enforcement arena, Sheriff Champlin enjoys serving his community as a mentor to the area youth by way of coaching youth baseball and soccer.

In November of 2015, Sheriff Champlin filed his petition to run as the Republican candidate for the office of Gallia County Sheriff. On November 8th, 2016, Sheriff Champlin was elected by the citizens of Gallia County to replace the two term incumbent sheriff. Sheriff Champlin was the first person to be elected to the office of sheriff in Gallia County who was not currently serving with the office since 1998. Sheriff Champlin is proud to serve the citizens of Gallia County and takes a proactive approach to enforcing the laws he has been sworn to uphold.
